Diabetic Foot Care

Diabetic foot care is an essential aspect of managing diabetes, as the condition can lead to a range of foot problems, including nerve damage (neuropathy) and poor blood circulation. These issues can make the feet less sensitive to pain and slower to heal from injury, increasing the risk of infections and ulcers. Therefore, daily foot inspections to check for cuts, blisters, redness, swelling, or nail problems are crucial for early detection and preventing complications.

Maintaining good foot hygiene is also vital. This includes washing feet daily in lukewarm water, drying them gently, especially between the toes, and moisturizing to prevent dry skin from itching or cracking. However, avoiding moisturizer between the toes is important to reduce the risk of fungal infections. People with diabetes should also wear clean, dry socks and well-fitting shoes that protect their feet from injuries.

Regular check-ups with a podiatrist are recommended for people with diabetes, as they can provide specialized care and detect problems that may go unnoticed due to neuropathy. They can also assist in managing corns, calluses, and toenails to prevent complications. If a diabetic patient notices any foot sores or changes, they should seek immediate medical attention, as even minor issues can quickly escalate into severe infections without proper care.
