Diabetic Shoe Program

The diabetic shoe program is designed to provide specialized footwear and inserts for people with diabetes who qualify under Medicare and other insurance plans. These shoes and inserts are created to reduce the risk of pressure sores and skin breakdown, which can lead to serious complications for individuals with diabetes. The program includes a thorough evaluation by a podiatrist to determine each patient’s specific needs and ensure the proper fit and function of the footwear.

Properly fitted diabetic shoes and inserts can help prevent foot ulcers and other complications from the disease. The shoes are typically made of soft, non-binding materials and may have extra depth to accommodate custom orthotics. The program often includes regular follow-ups with a podiatrist to monitor the feet’ condition and the footwear’s effectiveness. This proactive approach can significantly reduce the risk of foot-related complications for people with diabetes.

To participate in the diabetic shoe program, patients usually need a prescription from their healthcare provider. The prescription must indicate that the patient has diabetes and a qualifying foot condition, such as poor circulation, foot deformities, or a history of foot ulcers. The program may cover one pair of diabetic shoes and a certain number of inserts per year. Patients should check with their insurance provider for specific coverage details and to find a participating podiatrist who can provide the necessary care and footwear.
