Calluses/Corns

Calluses are thickened layers of skin that develop to protect the skin from pressure and friction. They often form on the feet due to walking or wearing ill-fitting shoes. While they’re usually painless, they can sometimes lead to discomfort or more severe issues such as skin ulceration or infection, especially in individuals with diabetes or poor circulation.

It’s important to wear shoes that fit well and provide adequate cushioning and support to prevent calluses. Over-the-counter padded insoles can also help reduce pressure on the areas prone to callus formation. Keeping feet clean and moisturized can help maintain healthy skin and prevent it from hardening. However, avoid over-moisturizing, as this can lead to skin breakdown.

Seeing a podiatrist is recommended if calluses become painful or lead to other foot problems. They can safely trim the calluses and provide treatment options such as custom orthotics to redistribute pressure on the foot. It’s important not to attempt to remove calluses at home, especially by cutting them or using harsh chemicals, as this can lead to injuries or infections. Regular check-ups with a podiatrist can help manage calluses and keep feet healthy.
