Foot injuries from work

Since 25% of the bones in our bodies are in the feet with muscles, ligaments and tendons, foot injuries can occur at your workplace in a variety of ways.  Some of the most common injuries are caused by long periods of standing, slips or trips, twisting or straining the feet.

Some of the issues that can occur with standing on your feet for long periods are:

  • Decreased range of motion
  • Varicose veins
  • Foot fat pads decrease over time
  • Plantar fascia stretch or strain
  • Arthritis

There are things that you can do to prevent foot injuries:

Use an anti-fatigue mat at your workstation with a foot rail or foot rest, and if you have to walk a lot use anti-fatigue insoles in your shoes.  Always wear comfortable shoes and replace your shoes when they become worn.  Remove items in your path and wipe up spills that can cause slips or trips.  Wear safety equipment, such as steel toe boots, on construction sites.
